Top 5 Godzilla movies you should watch

While with the new movie is underway its a good time to reflect on the best Godzilla movies. The first Western adaption of the movie let us down big time, and with the new one its anyone's guess where it can end up.

But lets focus on the movies that made Godzilla Godzilla! And don't forget all the cheesiness and campy-ness that goes a long with. Godzilla was always a product that was tightenend with Japan and is a symbol for most people for monsters movies in general. All in all Godzilla has been turned into 28 movies (not including the 1998 US adaption) and has its highs and lows regarding certain movies. Half way through the 90tees Toho wanted to stop with Godzilla movies and this is were Sony stepped in and made the Godzilla movie. Toho and most of the Japanese fans were outraged about the fact this one was made. It showed nothing of the spirit that Godzilla had made throughout the years and was disrespecting all the ground laying factors. Toho picked up Godzilla at the end of the 90tees as a counter reaction and spawned the Millenium series which was ended by Final Wars. And so here the list starts:

Top 5 Godzilla Movies

Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)

5. Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)

This film was released on the 50th anniversary of the first Godzilla movie, and in honor of that, this movie is all about fan service and lots and lots of monster fights. This movie also features some of the worst CG special effects in any Godzilla movie, but it makes up for it with some great classic rubber suit monster fights. Just about every monster and villain makes an appearance in this movie, and there's even a great gag with the American version of Godzilla (dubbed "Zilla" by fans) who is generally seen as a stain on the franchise, in which their fight lasts about three seconds with Godzilla dispatching Zilla with a single move.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)

4. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)

Well after the movies that came before this Toho was losing some Godzilla magic, since almost all of the movies were more child focussed. Toho threw around the formula and made a more mature movie with in the end one of the biggest nemesis rivals of Godzilla throughout the series. It also marked the 20th anniversary for the franchise and one that always is in the back of my head.

Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)

3. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)

This is one of the Godzilla movies that should in the top of every list since it features a good plot, great special effects and great monster play. Destoroyah was one of the most bad ass monsters to get in a fight with Godzilla. This also marked a time were Toho thought it was time to sell the franchise to the west. It is a strange thing to see this movie knowing after this the 1998 US movie came.

Godzilla, Mothra & King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)

2. Godzilla, Mothra & King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)

What are Godzilla movies about? Well, monsters, explosions, fights, destruction, and more explosions. With this movie they went balls out and blazing with all the adversaries for Godzilla is faced and not to mention the intention of the movie being a direct sequel to the 1954 Gojira movie. Everything about this movie is top notch from special effects to all the small details of the rampage throughout the cities.

Gojira (1954)

1. Gojira (1954)

Maybe sounds like an easy pick but the first movie had so much controversial things going with it. Japan found a way to react on what has happenend in WWII and it was a way to capture their fears and anger. It may sound far fetched but it actually

Of course, there are so many Godzilla movies its hard to choose from but I guess if you start out with this top 5 list you will have some entertainment value on your hands. There are a lot more Godzilla movies not in the list but a few you can watch after these are: King Kong vs Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Mothra, Destroy all Monsters, and the Return of Godzilla these are all iconic Godzilla movies which in their own are worth watching. As far as the new moview goes, we shall see what will happen expect a review pretty soon.
