Night of Terror 2012 report

Terror has yet again struck Amsterdam on the 21st of April 20112 for the 28th edition of Imagine Film festival: Night of Terror. Night of Terror (NoT) is a recurring phenomenon which shows the viewer's 4 slightly different movies. This year of course nothing less than the years before: a night full of blood soaked movies and crazy people that won't leave anything standing of the movies.

Night of Terror

Let's start with the opening of the night shall we... Every year the biggest gorehounds and horror freaks get together not just to watch movies but mostly give play by play commentary which makes the whole experience something you won't come across at any other festival. This is what makes the experience unique and it starts before the doors are even open! Hordes of people waiting at Tuschinski theater in Amsterdam to get in. The loud "Hooooeeerrrr" screams are coming from all directions and people on the street and especially at the Burger King weren't prepared for the undead loving hordes! As the doors open the horde breaks loose into the theater and start to be even louder than the security person that wants to explain the few rules that applied to this crazy night.

Night of Terror

As people are seated and got themselves some more beers Jan Doense came up to introduce the movies of the night. Which in the end nobody could hear because Jan Doense was called out "Homo" the whole time. Jan Doense is Mr Horror from the Netherlands he did a lot for the horror scene by starting up projects nobody even dared to touch. Every year he selects the movies with a few others for the NoT night and he will always make sure the menu isn't the same. This year's movies were:

Juan of the Dead

Juan of the Dead (Juan de los Muertos)

A Cuban film is rare to get any big exposure, and it's probably the reason why it was on the list. The movie has gotten over 600 votes on IMDB with an average of 6.6. And it won the audience award of best movie from the Miami Film Festival. It is about an Cuban town where everything seems to be a great little town... too great. The zombie virus has also arrived in Cuba and the local government thinks immediately of a capitalist conspiracy. 40 year old Juan and his friends pick up the fight and want to clean the streets.

Cabin in the Woods

Cabin in the Woods

One of the biggest hyped movies in the last 5 years that is coming from Hollywood land. Written by Joss Wedon and Drew Goddard it has to bring something, right? A few friends go to a Summer vacation house, little do they know that they're not alone and all craziness will break loose. After all the good reviews and awards the movie has gotten we should be in for a nice ride.

Rec3: Genesis

Rec3: Genesis

After Rec1 and Rec2 debuted at Night of Terror a few years back they couldn't leave part 3 out of it. The movie got changed a bit and the handycam work was there for minimal amount of time which I in the end joyed a lot more. Brighter settings and better special effects, so bring on the goods! The movie is taking place at a wedding where the uncle got bitten by a hound and got the mutated gen into his bloodstream. Make sure you fasten your seatbelts for this one boys and girls.

Inbred

Inbred

Inbred is an UK movie that is about 4 juvenile delinquents and 2 guards that need to test the kids and help judge the kids if they need to jail or just do some chores to make up for their bad habits. They find themselves in a small town in Yorkshire England where these redneck type of inbred people live. But when a small incident happens with some local youths escalates quickly into a bloody nightmare for the young criminals and the guards. The organization described it as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre on nitrous oxide and that bodes well. Sinister and hilarious at the same time.

In the end there was an energetic crowd who made sure you wouldn't forget the night. Where movies like Juan of the Dead and Inbreds took their time to unfold their stories the people got more and more restless the more talking the more screaming you would hear. The most joy people got was from Cabin in the Woods and Rec3, these movies were bloody and violent and with every nice death the cheers became louder and louder. Again Imagine delivered the goods for a great Night of Terror and we all will be back next year to raise the noise and shock Amsterdam!
