Done or Well Done is the Question?

From my last review the zombie classic "Zombie 3" to the next Rape Revenge "No Moriri Sola" lies a great deal of difference. While the first became a cult classic, the last one tries to be, or may in the future become a cult classic. It depends on whether the audience will like this piece of exploitation, the sometimes long, well lets be honest here, too long gratuitous rape scenes are just too much. It had its share of screen time on a few film festivals, but it was until a few weeks I could watch this film. I heard about it, but I was never really triggered to watch it. But when during a horror marathon I was forced to watch it, I had a bloody good time.

The beginning:

We have all seen our share of Rape Revenge Horror movies, is it not "I Spit on your Grave" or the unknown "Night Train Murders" it will be "Last House on the Left". Written, edited and directed by Adrián García Bogliano, "No Moriri Sola" is the newest instalment in this subgenre, and in my opinion a good addition to the genre. Adrián García Bogliano is a young director, with experience in a few shorts and full feature horror movies like "36 Pesos", he actually surprised me with the horror movie "Massacre Esta Noche" which screened last year at the Imagine Film Festival. The interesting parts of this movie are probably the production values, at first when you start watching you think where does this Grindhouse movie come from, and yes, this is a good thing. The sound department did a good job, the focus en the detail of the sounds where incredible for a low budget venture like this, you actually believe your in the Argentine woods. And the cinematography department, two thumbs up for the guerrilla filmmaking and the worn look this movie has, it fits perfectly with all the horror that's going on screen, especially the worn Grindhouse filter does wonders for the film. Well lets talk about the actors, they did an excellent job with the given script, which was merely an excuse to put the horror scenes together.

The story:

The movie starts with our four lead girls, driving and underway to nowhere, eventually you find out each of the girls has a reason to be underway, important or not. The introduction shows the innocence of the lead actress and the not so innocence of a few others. When they by accident find a girl lying on the side of a abandoned road, they stop and the find out the girl is covered in blood and beaten severely. When they help her to the car, they see a SUV nearby and the perpetrators, and they think they weren‘t seen. With fast pace they drive to the nearest police station to try to help and save the girl, but the girl bleeds to death in the backseat of the car. When they arrive the police officer at the station tries to help the girls the best he can, because they are in the middle of nowhere and the argentine backwoods are enormous. A good thing about this piece is that everybody seems to be helpful and social, but when another police officer arrives at the station we find out that he is also one of the rapists, and this sets the film in motion. There is a well shot scene, where you see the lead actress filling the report at the police station, and in the background you see the SUV being parked and the police officer stepping out then you now, this is not for the saints.

The girls except for the lead, don‘t see the danger they are in, because after the failed the report they went on there way and think they can continue there journey, well continue they shall, into a nightmare. After they think they are safe they baddies going into pursuit and force their car to a stop. They take the girls into the woods where they brutally raped repeatedly and beaten, lets just say this takes a while and wasn‘t a pleasant site. When the baddies are done with their evil doing, they leave the girls except for one. When we reach this point the movie really starts and your in for a treat, because eventually in movies like this, the revenge needs to be, and in this case is, sweet.

No Morire Sola 4

After one of the girls is beaten to death, this unleashes the fury of the others and they will unleash themselves, hell on the perpetrators. There is one scene that stands out, and this one involves, a crazed raped girl, barbwire and the bad guy, all I will say revenge is best served on a dish very cold. Also a good choice by the director, is that the baddies don‘t know what‘s coming to them, this makes the revenge even more believable and horrific. I need to mention that the special effects are well done as well, the wounds, blood and bloody kills are well treated, and in full effect.

No Morire Sola 5

This is not a film where the camera goes away when the horror begins, it will show it all. I found that the female actresses, did a perfect job jumping from the innocent girl role, to the humiliated one and to the raged and even cold blooded killers they will become in the end. The question lies will they all survive or not, this you need to find out yourself so I m not going to spoil that. My final words will be that it‘s a well made film with a small budget, where by luck or good direction the final product delivers the punches. I was surprised and I think, so will those who will find and watch this movie.
